China has reacted sharply to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address,

where he made a reference to a Chinese spy balloon shot down over the Atlantic on Saturday.

During a Tuesday night speech, Mr. Biden said the US wanted to "seek competition,

not conflict" with China but warned that "if China threatens our sovereignty, we will do what we can to defend our country."

will work".  China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning responded to his comments at a daily briefing on Wednesday,

accusing the US of trying to "deceive" the nation.

These tensions came to a head when it emerged that the US had passed on intelligence to 40 countries, which the Pentagon has so far gathered on China's surveillance balloons.
