Walmart is denying a press release saying it will begin partnering with Litecoin, one of the oldest cryptocurrencies.
“Walmart has no affiliation with Litecoin, the retailer said in a statement on its website, noting that the company was “the subject of a fake news release.”
The release was sent down by Globenewswire at 9:30 a.m. EDT, but has since been removed. Litecoin tweeted the press release, which claimed that Walmart would start accepting the digital currency from October 1, but then deleted the tweet.
Several news outlets published reports based on the release before Walmart denied the release. Litecoin briefly soared over 25%, but wiped out gains after being faked by Walmart. Litecoin stock was trading down 5% last time.
